New booze rules raise alarm

The government has been called on to enforce alcohol-control regulations amid fears that easing the law could lead to more calamitous incidents, particularly during the Songkran holiday. The "Expanding Drinking Zones vs Increased Risks During Songkran" seminar was held recently by the Alcohol Prevention Network, Women and Men Progressive Movement Foundation, Social Synergy Network Foundation, Life Quality Development Network and the Youth Health Promotion Network. During the seminar, Wisanu Sritawong, chairman of Social Synergy Network Foundation, expressed concern that the upcoming Songkran festival will see an increase in alcohol consumption and activities such as concerts and water play could lead to more drinking-related incidents and violence due to the eased policy. The group claims a survey it carried out last year, in 20 provinces, saw 81% of respondents agree it was necessary to ban alcohol during Songkran to reduce violent crime. The same poll...

Fireflies Illuminate North Charleston: Firefly Distillery Marks 20 Years with Anniversary Celebration

The Firefly Distillery, known for pioneering Sweet Tea Vodka, is gearing up to mark its 20th year next month. This significant occasion on April 19 will commemorate the distillery’s origins tied to sweet tea through various activities including live performances, mixology contests, and discounted beverages from midday until early evening. Scott Newitt, who co-founded Firefly Distillery, looked back on their journey. I don’t believe either Jim or I fully grasped where the concept of Sweet Tea Vodka might lead when we first started out. However, two decades down the line, it’s truly remarkable to revisit those early days and realize just how much ground we’ve covered and what an empire we have established together. It all commenced as one simple offering yet blossomed into a quintessential Southern icon—a place both residents and tourists frequent—and grew into a clan that keeps getting bigger,” Newitt stated. “On this milestone 20-year mark, we feel thrilled not only t...

Bourbon's Ease Revealed: The True Challenge in Crafting Top-Shelf Whiskey

Image
Back in 2012, Herman Mihalich spent enough late nights in his fledgling distillery that he had a routine. He killed time online and kept handy his trusty logbook, where he meticulously tracked recipes, times and temperatures. The recent evenings were when everything started falling apart, an occurrence that was more frequent back then compared to today. Mihalich is the creator of Dad's Hat Rye , which today puts out more rye whiskey than any other distiller in Pennsylvania, a state that once defined the category. Currently, Pennsylvania hasn't regained its former status, and rye continues to play second fiddle to bourbon, which largely defines American whiskey for most consumers. According to the industry association, approximately twenty times more bottles of bourbon are sold annually compared to rye. Distilled Spirits Council —though rye is growing faster from that lower base. Mihalich is a zealous promoter of rye whiskey who has won over many admirers—their ...

It's commonly remarked that the British have a fondness for their tea, chatting about the weather, and let’s be honest, having a drink. So, it comes as no surprise that data from The Global Drug Survey of 2019, which looked into over 120,000 adults globally, revealed that people in Britain lead the world in getting intoxicated at least weekly. Over time, regular consumption leads to gradual harm that isn't immediately apparent," explains Professor Sally Marlow, an expert in mental health and addiction at King’s College London. "Such damage affects our liver, stomach, skin, and brain. In our 40s and 50s, these issues tend to escalate," explains Professor Marlow. "Importantly, during this period, we're also more prone to becoming heavily dependent on alcohol; for some individuals, this can even lead to addiction—or as experts refer to it, dependence. This makes quitting harder and reduces our ability to manage our consumption. Nevertheless, red...
