Healthcare: What would we do without foreign funding?

Although not an expert in the global health, but the future for Nigeria's healthcare intervention looks bleak. Over the decades, we have over depended on foreign aids in managing HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal mortality, and malnutrition. Looking at it critically, it seems only few medical conditions are not supported by foreign aid. Of course it's true regarding the huge chunk of our budget these medications would cost if left to be funded domestically. As someone who works and mingles in the ladder below, I have witnessed a lot of sorrowful occurrences. Ordinary Nigerians and even the healthcare professionals have not help in making the matter good. The gross mismanagement, working solely for the remuneration, and how the locals themselves can manipulate things just to make sure funding for the polio and measles virus vaccine campaign kept coming is abominable. Local community health workers are ravenously taking what little came for th...

Global health: Time to build back better after US aid withdrawal

The months since United States President Donald Trump’s election have been characterised by jitters in the global health community. These jitters have not been unfounded, based on actions he took in his first term such as expanding the global gag rule that led to widespread disruption of health programmes. But nothing could have prepared the world for the shocking decision to dismantle USAID overnight, which some have termed “geopolitical vandalism” .The impact of this decision will take time to comprehend, partly because data systems that track the impact of various programmes across the world have also been closed. The termination of more than 85 per cent of 6,300 projects in less than a month of review preceded by stop-work orders and piecemeal exemptions was highly disruptive. The drastic decision was taken without consulting key players: large international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) that were the preferred contractors for USAID, thousands of implementing partners on the g...

RFK Jr-backed plan has led to health crisis that puts millions at risk

Image
READ MORE: RFK Jr wants to pull fluoride from US tap water, experts push back At least 25 million Americans live in dental deserts - areas where dentists are scarce and residents face skyrocketing rates of tooth decay, emergency surgeries, and chronic health problems. Dentists warn these issues will only worsen with the removal of fluoride from drinking water, which has reduced tooth decay and cavities for over 80 years. Roughly 230 counties across the US lack a sufficient number of dentists to cater to the number of people living there, and most have removed or are considering removing fluoride from their water. Robert F Kennedy Jr, the current head of the Department of Health and Human Services, has often promoted unproven claims that the common cavity preventative is dangerous. The controversy surrounding fluoride stems from a meta-analysis of dozens of studies showing children exposed to higher fluoride levels had lower IQ sc...

Senators Unveil Bipartisan Plan for Flexible School Milk Options

On Wednesday, a group of three senators from both parties presented a plan requiring schools to provide non-dairy milk alternatives during lunch for students who are lactose intolerant or follow specific diets. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has historically mandated that school lunches must contain milk on every tray so that schools can receive reimbursement for these meals. However, the Freedom in School Cafeterias and Lunches (FISCAL) Act, proposed by Senators John Fetterman (D-PA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and John Kennedy (R-LA), aims to revise current laws to mandate that educational institutions provide students with "plant-based milk" options that adhere to nutritional guidelines set by the Secretary. We must ensure our children receive proper nourishment at school through every possible means," Fetterman stated. "This non-partisan legislation eliminates superfluous bureaucratic hurdles within our nutritional aid initiatives, allowing studen...

Kenya’s Primary Health Care Still Struggling to Reach Most Vulnerable

Image
By Joyce Chimbi The distance between Kenya’s most vulnerable populations and the health services they need to thrive and contribute fully within our society has always been wide. Our oldest and youngest citizens, people with disability, the chronically ill, people living in poverty, and women are too often left behind in our health system despite multiple programs and investments meant to ensure their care, including the Beyond Zero Initiative that sought to bring maternal and infant mortality down to zero. Kenya’s capital, Nairobi is home to nearly 2.5 million people living in about 200 informal settlements, representing 60 percent of its population. Located just outside Nairobi CBD, Kibra, Africa’s biggest informal settlement and one of the biggest in the world, is home to an estimated 600,000 to 1,000,000 people . “Very bad things happen to poor people. If you are a woman and a person with disability, you will face many problems such as disc...

(SouthAfricaFilms21) -- In order to spur economic development and rejuvenate its run-down urban areas, South Africa requires a robust and equitable land expropriation law, according to the nation’s minister of public works and infrastructure. Dean Macpherson, a member of the opposition Democratic Alliance—the second-largest party in South Africa’s coalition government—has shed light on the intricate issues involved in the ongoing discussion about land reform in the country. This controversy came under scrutiny after U.S. President Donald Trump suspended assistance and asserted that properties owned by white individuals were being expropriated in South Africa without compensation. It should be noted that not a single piece of land was taken over following the end of apartheid in 1994. The main reason behind the legislation that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa enacted in December is aimed at providing restitution to Black individuals who were denied their right to own pro...
