Large rise in NI universities' mental health spending since Covid

Image
The amount of money Northern Ireland universities are spending on mental health and wellbeing services for students has increased significantly since the Covid-19 pandemic. Figures received via Freedom of Information requests have revealed the amount of money allocated has increased by an average of more than 40% since 2020. That includes the annual amount for salaries, wellbeing services and counselling. Northern Ireland's mental health champion welcomed the increased spending but called for a joined-up approach with statutory services. Professor Siobhan O'Neill said starting university very often coincided with the age at which most common mental disorders first present themselves. She put an increase in the recorded rates of poor mental health in students down to "increased financial and social pressure" as well as a "reduced stigma and a willingness to ask for help". "International students, and those from marginalised communiti...

Rare virus that killed Gene Hackman's wife claims three more lives

Image
The rare hantavirus that killed Gene Hackman 's wife Betsy Arakawa has claimed the lives of three more people in California . The victims were all from the town of Mammoth Lakes, around 250 miles inland from San Francisco, where officials said they had been struck by hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) . Dr. Tom Boo, the Public Health Officer for Mono County, where the deaths occurred, described the incidents coming so close together as 'tragic and alarming.' The health official said it is not yet understood where the deceased individuals had contracted the deadly virus, which is exceedingly uncommon. HPS is so rare in the US that only one or two people die every year, and there have only been around 1,000 cases in the past three decades, mostly among farmers, hikers and campers and homeless populations. The deaths come weeks after Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their New Mexico home on February 26 , afte...

Biden's doctor will be grilled by Congress over 'cognitive decline'

Image
A Republican lawmaker revealed Joe Biden 's White House doctor will be grilled by Congress over the former president's cognitive health. Republicans and some Democrats have long called for the truth behind what they claim is a cognitive decline in the 82-year-old during his presidency. Now, Texas Representative Ronny Jackson, who has a medical degree, said Dr. Kevin O'Connor will have to speak for the Democrat leader's health. 'Dr. Kevin O’Connor will absolutely, positively be implicated in the cover-up of this,' Jackson told the New York Post . 'I guarantee you Kevin O’Connor has medical information that the American people don’t have. 'I’ve known him for a long time; he’s part of the Biden family. He would do or say anything to cover up and protect that family, regardless of what it meant professionally for him,' the GOP representative accused. 'This could not have been covered u...

Fighting Health Stigma Through Strategic Communication

Stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to healthcare access both in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. It leaves individuals isolated and vulnerable. People suffering from medical conditions like cancer or mental health disorders carry heavy social judgment, making it difficult for them to seek help. February, being cancer awareness month, serves as a crucial reminder of the misconceptions that fuel this stigma. Some people are misinformed and have this misconception that cancer is contagious, leading to heartbreaking situations where patients are avoided by even their closest friends, caregivers, and family members. Similarly, those battling depression or anxiety often face dismissive attitudes, being told to 'snap out of it' rather than receiving the support and understanding they need. Health stigma takes various forms, impacting how individuals are perceived, how they view themselves, and how institutions respond to them. One specific type of health stigma...

Residents of Bayelsa State heaved a sigh of relief as the World Health Organisation (WHO) recently commenced mass vaccination against cholera. While residents claimed there were casualties, the state government said no life has been lost to the disease outbreak. Preventing infections in individuals with Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that affects hemoglobin, causing red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped. These abnormal cells can block blood flow and lead to various complications, including an increased risk of infections. The spleen, which plays a crucial role in filtering bacteria and supporting immune function, is often impaired in individuals with SCD, making them more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections. Understanding these risks and implementing effective prevention strategies is essential for managing the disease and improving quality of life. Why are individuals with SCD more susceptible to infections? One of the most critical complications of SCD is functional asplenia, a condition in which the spleen is either damaged or non-functional. The spleen is responsible for filtering out bacteria, particularly encapsulated bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria meningitidis. When ...

Said Benjebli’s death sparks tough questions about mental health and stigma in Morocco

The death of controversial public figure Said Benjebli left many shaken. But behind the headlines and debates was a man quietly battling a much deeper struggle: bipolar disorder. Thursday, news broke from Boston, where Benjebli had been living, confirming that he had taken his own life. In a letter he wrote before his death, Benjebli shared his pain, his apologies to loved ones, and his final wish—for understanding. “The illness killed me,” he wrote. “Or rather, made me kill myself.” While tributes poured in from friends and colleagues, so did online hate. Some mocked his death. Others accused him of faking it. A few even suggested that his atheism was to blame. But in between the noise, a more important truth emerged: Morocco still struggles to talk honestly about mental health. As one social media user put it, “Underdeveloped societies do not show mercy to people during their periods of mental illness… Mocking them or expelling them from family or...

Dead pregnant woman: Lagos hospital denies requesting N500,000 for treatment

The Lagos private hospital, As Salam Convalescent Centre, located in Iwerekun 1, Ibeju/Lekki, has denied claims that it demanded an upfront payment of N500,000 before offering treatment to a pregnant woman, Kemi, who later died from pregnancy complications. Kemi’s grieving husband, Akinbobola Folajimi, made the allegation in a viral video, accusing the hospital of refusing to give medical treatment to his heavily pregnant wife due to his inability to make the upfront payment. In the video, Kemi, visibly weak, was seen inside a car while her husband desperately tried to keep her conscious. Calling her name repeatedly, he pleaded, “My goodness! Kemi, look at me. Stay strong; look at me. Think about your kids, please. You need to be forceful for me.” Folajimi later claimed in a post that after being turned away by the private hospital, they were referred to a general hospital in Epe, where his wife died midway. He wrote, “The doctor told me to deposit N5...

Equestrian athletes across the globe, mount your horses and prepare for action—thousands of African children living with HIV require your assistance, despite many of you being affluent, predominantly Caucasian individuals. Cystic fibrosis couldn't stop me rowing the Atlantic

A woman with a genetic illness that affects her ability to breathe has completed a world record-breaking rowing challenge in the Atlantic Ocean. Sophie Pierce, 32, of Neyland Rowing Club in Pembrokeshire, is the first person with cystic fibrosis to brave the journey.
