The number of children receiving extra help in the classroom due to dyslexia, autism and mental health problems has soared by 58 per cent since the pandemic. Meanwhile, those getting additional work to keep them stretched and challenged has slumped by 17 per cent. The revelation comes as ministers are facing pressure to make education reforms, as standards of reading, writing and maths are falling away amid growing violence, ill-discipline and absenteeism. Last night, Chris McGovern, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said: ‘This neglect of the most able children – whether with academic or practical skills - is potentially disastrous. ‘So-called inclusive education should mean catering for different abilities and getting the maximum from them all.’ He added: ‘Not being taught in line wi...

Back of queue threat for people who miss NHS appointments

Image
Patients who regularly miss NHS appointments could be sent to the back of the queue under plans to cut waiting times, Wales has been told. It is one of a number of Welsh government ideas being discussed to improve the NHS, which has recently seen small reductions in record waiting lists. The threat of sanctions would be balanced by an improved Welsh NHS app, which would allow patients to track their progress through the system and make or amend appointments at the touch of a button. Health boards could also have their funding clawed back if they have been given extra cash to hit specific targets but do not make them. But this will not affect core health board funding. The plans are being framed as striking a new deal between the NHS and patients, where there would be a greater expectation for patients to play their part. In order to better manage waiting lists, there could also be increased levels of intervention to get patients fit for surgery, such as people ...

Family code, penal reforms, and health insurance bills to be discussed in Morocco’s spring sessions

Image
Key, long-awaited bills are set to be presented and approved during the upcoming spring session of Morocco’s fourth legislative year, starting next week. These bills, some of which have been pending for years, continue to spark debates, both between the government and relevant professional groups, and among political and societal factions with differing views. Among the major pieces of legislation expected to advance is the amended Family Code, which was reviewed by the High Council of Ulama. It is anticipated to be presented for approval in the House of Representatives during this session. Parliamentary readings suggest the law will face little resistance, following the King’s intervention and referral to the High Council for mediation. Disagreements persist between the Ministry of Justice...
