48 of the Safest Cars in America as Rated by the IIHS
- The IIHS has recently selected the top safety picks among vehicles sold in America. Just 48 models made the cut.
- Higher standards addressing rear-seat safety meant fewer winners for 2025.
- Safe vehicles abide across the spectrum of cars, trucks, and SUVs.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has once again selected its top safety picks. Does your vehicle make the list?
This year's exams were more challenging, with an emphasis on incorporating crash test dummies in the rear seats.
The Institute’s updated moderate overlap front test adds a second crash test dummy seated behind the driver and emphasizes back seat safety, IIHS said. Last year, an “acceptable” or “good” rating in the updated test was a requirement for the higher-tier Top Safety Pick+ award. However, a “good” rating in the original test was still enough to earn the base award.
“This year, vehicles must earn an ‘acceptable’ rating in the updated test to qualify for Top Safety Pick, while a ‘good’ rating is required for the ‘plus,’” the Institute said.
The frontal overlap test slams the car directly into a solid barrier just beside the left-front headlamp. In the side-impact test, a massive sled crashes into the right-side B-pillar. Though graphic, these tests are crucial for enhancing automotive safety.
Furthermore, a vehicle must receive a 'satisfactory' or 'positive' evaluation in the pedestrian front impact test. prevention Evaluation, measuring effectiveness under both daylight and night-time settings. Detecting pedestrians necessitates multiple sensors.
(IIHS was established and supported financially by insurance companies. The optimistic view holds that this makes everyone safer. On the more cynical side, some argue that these companies simply do not wish to cover as many payouts. Choose your perspective.)
We're once more pushing car manufacturers to ensure that their latest models are even safer compared to what they produced just last year," stated David Harkey, the president of IIHS. "Each model receiving a 2025 accolade provides an exceptional standard of protection for occupants sitting up front as well as those in the rear seats.
This year 48 vehicles are on the list, compared to 71 from 2024.
