Ben Affleck Praises Matt Damon's Director Picks: "I Might Just Show Up on the 'Odyssey' Set to Watch Nolan"

Ben Affleck said in a conversation with GQ magazine That his acting career began to diverge from that of his friend Matt Damon's after Damon opted for roles determined by the director, which he considered a smart decision early on.

Following their Academy Award win for Best Original Screenplay from the film "Good Will Hunting" in 1997, Damon collaborated with notable directors including Steven Spielberg ("Saving Private Ryan"), Anthony Minghella ("The Talented Mr. Ripley"), Robert Redford ("The Legend of Bagger Vance"), and Steven Soderbergh ("Ocean’s Eleven"). Meanwhile, Affleck ventured into high-octane blockbusters like "Armageddon" and mainstream productions such as "Pearl Harbor" and "Daredevil."

I assumed you were about to contrast our acting careers, but had I been part of that conversation, I'd have pointed out that Matt understood sooner than I did the importance of focusing closely on the director as the primary factor influencing his decisions regarding film projects, which turned out to be quite astute. told GQ Regarding how their acting careers diverged from Matt Damon’s, he mentioned, “I definitely had chances to star in movies with directors like Scorsese and Spielberg. It wasn’t as though I rejected them saying, 'No, Scorsese, no Spielberg, I won't join your film.’ We often find ourselves in positions where opportunities arise, but ultimately, we are at the mercy of those circumstances.”

"Affleck also mentioned, 'I would have done ‘Saving Private Ryan.' If Martin Scorsese asked me to play a waiter, I’d do it without hesitation,'” he continued during the conversation. “Steven Spielberg is among the greatest filmmakers who’ve ever lived. My feelings are similar towards Chris Nolan. Maybe I’ll stop by Matt’s set just to observe Nolan directing. This isn’t an exaggeration.”

Damon is presently shooting Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," where he plays the leading part alongside an extensive group of co-stars featuring Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, among others. This marks his third time working with Nolan after their previous projects together, "Interstellar" and "Oppenheimer."

Affleck shared with GQ about his friend heading into action mode for Christopher Nolan’s film. He mentioned they were discussing how Matt has been heavily involved in stunt rehearsals, noting, “It feels like quite some time since he did something like this.” According to Affleck, “He truly needs to master those fight scenes; we’re looking at territory similar to 'The Bourne Identity.'"

Affleck returns to action roles in "The Accountant 2," set for release on April 25. Even though he participated in the follow-up film, the actor acknowledges that his time doing stunts is over.

“I used to be really enthusiastic about saying, 'I’ll handle the fight scenes; I’ll perform the stunts,'” he explained. “Now, my attitude has shifted more towards thinking when will the professional stunt person take over these actions? Part of this change comes from recognizing their superior skills compared to mine. It’s important for someone to look impressive during those sequences. Also, purely out of self-interest, performing them myself would leave me sore and exhausted.”
