Breaking News: 49ers and Brock Purdy Make Moves in Contract Talks

The 49ers have consistently indicated their intention to retain Brock Purdy long-term. Following reports of initial contract discussions last month, it appears that both parties have reached some common ground.

Based on what Jordan Schultz from Fox Sports reported Purdy and the 49ers are currently "in active negotiations" for a new agreement. They aim to conclude the contract prior to the beginning of the 2025 season.

The source warned that an immediate extension is not expected, yet they kept the possibility open for the contract to be completed before the upcoming monthly draft. Regardless of this, both parties are clearly anticipated to reach their conclusion within the next several months.

So far, everyone knows about Purdy’s journey. As a rookie, he led his team to the NFC Championship Game despite being dubbed Mr. Irrelevant earlier. In his second year, he helped them reach the Super Bowl. Although the 49ers' season in 2024 did not meet expectations, Purdy has solidified his position as the cornerstone quarterback of the franchise and positioned himself for a substantial payday.

Due to being selected at pick number 262 in the draft, Purdy has offered the 49ers substantial savings over the last three years, with the quarterback receiving only $2.6 million during this period. However, thanks to various performance incentives, Purdy’s earnings will increase significantly to $5.2 million in 2025; nonetheless, even after this raise, he remains well below current market value for quarterbacks.

Although it appears likely that Purdy will sign an extended deal with the 49ers, the value of this contract remains uncertain. According to Schultz, Purdy may find it challenging to match Dak Prescott's average annual salary of $60 million. However, various sources anticipate that his new contract might land somewhere between $50 million and $55 million annually. Additionally, a general manager from another team noted that Purdy could opt for a smaller payday to support his current club; nevertheless, this official still expects him to secure one of the highest deals available.

The San Francisco 49ers' management team has faced challenges when handling contract extensions for key athletes recently. According to Schultz, agreements with stars such as Nick Bosa and Brandon Aiyuk came together just prior to the start of the regular season. Similarly, negotiations over contracts for Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel took longer than expected. Given this backdrop, the organization aims to sidestep potential conflicts regarding their quarterback’s deal. Additionally, there appears to be an increased urgency to finalize Jimmy Garoppolo’s replacement, Jeff Driskel, at the earliest opportunity.
