College of Southern Nevada Links Learners to Livelihood Programs

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) — With Nevada still leading the country in unemployment rates, educators from the College of Southern Nevada are working to educate residents about various workforce programs designed to enable individuals to secure stable wages along with opportunities for advancement in their careers.

FOX5 reached out to representatives from the Adult Career Education Services along with the Division of Workforce and Economic Development Programs.

Many workforce education and training initiatives span from eight to sixteen weeks, and authorities assist participants in securing federal and private financial aid for tuition fees. Based on individual eligibility, these educational opportunities may either be complimentary or available at a significantly discounted price.

They include Manufacturing Technician , a Dialysis Technician , Advanced Manufacturing (machine operations) and IT and digital skills. The starting pay for a dialysis technician is around $17 per hour, whereas employees in manufacturing can earn up to $21 hourly.

The programs are meant to assist workers who may only be making minimum wage, are underemployed, or unemployed--and quickly need a job. The fields have a shortage of workers and are constantly hiring.

"[Students] visit us, where they meet with one of our advisors and guides. During these meetings, they discuss some of their obstacles and difficulties, and we help them with financing their tuition," explained Gladis Barrios, who manages the Adult Career Education Services program.

"We observe that students' self-assurance grows. Not only do we notice their professional and academic development, but they also acquire the necessary skills to become attractive candidates in the job market, along with certifications that demonstrate to potential employers that they possess these skills," Barrios stated.

Once students finish a program and secure employment, CSN motivates them to pursue further education for enhancing their career prospects.
