CSU Announces New Men’s Basketball Coach After Thrilling Round 2 March Madness Run
DENVER (KDVR) — It has been revealed that the 21st head coach for the Colorado State University men’s basketball team has been selected. Ali Farokhmanesh, who has been with the team in Fort Collins for the last seven years, As a helper and co-head trainer.
In their statement, CSU mentioned that Farokhmanesh has played a crucial role in the university's recent achievements. The institution stated that Farokhmanesh will "move one spot down" to take up the vacant position vacated by former head coach Niko Medved, who is now moving on to join the University of Minnesota.
He was part of the coaching staff that assisted the Rams in making three NCAA Tournament appearances in 2022, 2024, and 2025, along with their advancement to the NIT semifinals in 2021. Additionally, he played a role in securing CSU’s first Mountain West Tournament championship in 22 years.
I'm excited that Ali will keep heading our men’s basketball program, this time as the head coach," stated Director of Athletics John Weber in the university’s release. "Ali possesses an unwavering mindset that drives him every day, which was crucial when searching for the successor to lead our men’s basketball team.
There has been considerable interest in the head coaching role at Colorado State," Weber went on. "Following a highly thorough and competitive nationwide search, I believe Ali's ongoing guidance of this program is crucial and truly energizes me. His talent for connecting with individuals has driven his success throughout his career. I am excited about having Ali—alongside his wife Mallory and their four children—continue as part of the CSU community and expand upon the winning legacy he has contributed to during the last seven years.
The university acknowledged Farokhmanesh for contributing to the development of NBA prospects David Roddy, Isaiah Stevens, and Nique Clifford throughout his time there. These athletes maintain the longest ongoing run of first-team All-Mountain West honors—a span of seven years.
I want to express my gratitude to President Amy Parsons, John Weber, Scott Sidwell, and Christina Diaz for their faith in me and for providing me with the chance to lead as the head coach at Colorado State," stated Farokhmanesh in the university’s release. "Having served alongside Coach Medved has truly been an honor, and I'll always appreciate his role in bringing me to Fort Collins. The university and this state hold a special place due to wonderful individuals. I'm thankful for everyone who has made us feel welcomed and supported throughout our stay and eagerly anticipate strengthening these connections within our community. I’m excited about building upon the winning legacy created by our players and taking it even further.
Farokhmanesh served as an assistant coach at Drake under Medved for a year prior to joining CSU. Prior to his coaching career, according to CSU, he worked as both a graduate assistant and the director of player relations and development at Nebraska. Additionally, Farokhmanesh had experience as a collegiate athlete, having played basketball for Northern Iowa where he contributed to their participation in two NCAA Tournaments and their inaugural trip to the Sweet 16 round.
Farokhmanesh also participated in basketball for four years in Europe, according to CSU.
