Gaza Ceasefire Crumbles: Israel Launches 'Extensive' Attacks, Vows to Resume Fighting
Gaza's precarious truce crumbled early Tuesday when Israel launched fatal attacks throughout the territory. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to respond with "escalating military force" against Hamas.
The surprise attacks occurred throughout the night, hitting various areas across Gaza. This marks the most significant military action since a prolonged truce was established. In response, Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, stated, " Tonight we have resumed combat operations in Gaza."
The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas was already hanging in the balance with phase one ending two weeks ago and all sides at loggerheads over a path forward that might see remaining Israeli hostages freed and a permanent peace secured.
Israel's military and security authorities stated that they are "carrying out widespread attacks" against Hamas targets in Gaza. In retaliation, Hamas blamed Netanyahu and what it characterized as his ultra-right-wing administration for choosing to nullify the truce agreement, thereby "endangering the hostages in Gaza with an uncertain future."
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 86 individuals have died and 134 have been wounded as a result of the Israeli airstrikes.
The Civil Defense in Gaza stated that several individuals were "buried beneath the debris of houses that were targeted by bombings across different regions" within the territory. Local reporters in Gaza mentioned hearing explosions in numerous places, such as Gaza City, Khan Younis, and Deir al-Balah.
Videos obtained by gudangmovies21showed scenes of panic and chaos across Gaza as families desperately rushed wounded loved ones to hospital and rescue workers transported patients in ambulances or on stretchers. The images showed several young children killed by the strikes.
Reports of deaths and injuries, involving children among others, have emerged across various locations along the Gaza Strip, spanning over 30 kilometers—from its north to south. This includes incidents at Al-Awda hospital in Tal Al-Zaatar in northern Gaza, another Al-Awда hospital in Nuseirat within central Gaza, as well as at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, located in the southern part of the region.
Multiple hospitals stated that the injuries resulted from residential areas being struck by the attacks.
‘As long as necessary’
The Israeli military has kept operating within Gaza following the commencement of the ceasefire on January 19; however, Tuesday’s airstrikes serve as the most evident indication yet that attempts to prolong the truce have failed.
Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz ordered the operation, accusing Hamas of “repeatedly” refusing to release hostages and rejecting all offers from United States presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and mediators.
"The Israel Defense Forces are presently targeting locations affiliated with the Hamas terrorist group across the Gaza Strip. This operation aims to meet the wartime objectives set by the political leadership, which include securing the release of all our captives—both alive and deceased," stated the Prime Minister’s Office in an official announcement.
Starting now, Israel will respond to Hamas with growing military force.
The strikes occur just days following when the U.S. presented new proposal This would ensure the liberation of several live hostages held by Hamas in return for extending the Israel-Hamas truce for one month.
According to a negotiator involved, the American plan suggests that Israel should end its restriction on delivering humanitarian assistance into Gaza, a measure that has persisted for over fourteen days now.
An Israeli official claimed the extensive attack in Gaza was “preemptive” and said the strikes would “continue as long as necessary and will expand beyond airstrikes.”
The official declined to provide any details about what they claimed was Hamas’ “readiness to execute terror attacks, build up force and re-arm” but said the strikes were targeting the group’s “mid-ranking military commanders, leadership officials and terrorist infrastructure.”
This is a developing story and will be updated.
