Intel's New Leader Pledges to Rival Nvidia in AI Servers
Intel’s newly appointed CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, has a clear message for investors: Intel intends to go head-to-head with Nvidia in the realm of AI hardware.
"There is no doubt that enhancing our stance in the cloud-based AI data center sector by creating robust rack-scale system solutions will be essential," Tan stated in Intel’s yearly filing submitted on Thursday, emphasizing this as a major focus area for him and his team.
Earlier this month, Tan was named The permanent CEO of Intel. He takes over from the previous CEO, Pat Gelsinger, who stepped down in December.
On Thursday, Intel’s stock dropped 1.8% to $23.01.
The newly appointed Intel leader was alluding to rivaling Nvidia’s premium GB200 NVL72 Blackwell AI system, as mentioned by an ex-Intel executive. called The present "top predator" in AI computation boasts 72 GPUs interconnected within a single server rack, as opposed to the earlier model which had only eight GPUs. This setup provides an exceptional concentration of computational power in a compact area.
Nvidia leads the field in AI data-center equipment.
On the contrary, Intel’s AI offerings haven’t performed well. In October last year, the company admitted The Gaudi-AI accelerators won't meet their previous revenue projection of $500 million for 2024. In January, Intel stated they wouldn't release their upcoming AI data center product, Falcon Shores, and would redirect their resources towards developing an alternative AI data-center solution named Jaguar Shores.
Tan hopes that with his guidance, Intel’s AI division will be able to regain momentum.
