Longtime Blighted Boston Hotel Finally Demolished

BOSTON HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) - The demolition started at the old Norwood Inn in Boston Heights on Monday.

Previously an admired icon, the hotel has remained empty since 2019, deteriorating over time.

The audience burst into cheers as the demolition started.

"It’s simply an incredible sensation to see this finally happen," remarked Rich Lyon, a council member from Boston Heights.

Residents of Boston Heights and nearby areas recounted their cherished recollections of the hotel, which has stood there since the swinging sixties.

"When I was in high school, my sister used to work at the reception area, which means it has been quite some time ago...the place has always been here," stated Ralph McDonnell from Hudson.

In 2019, the hotel shut down permanently and hasn’t welcomed guests again since then. Since closing, it has turned into an unsightly sight at the entrance of Boston Heights.

"Each day as you pass by, there are more shattered windows and graffiti. The whole place seems to be deteriorating. Therefore, I believe everyone within the neighborhood feels delighted about turning over a fresh page for this particular plot of land," stated McDonnell.

The previous year, the town of Boston Heights received almost $900,000 from the state via the Ohio Department of Development’s Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program to demolish the area.

The mayor of Boston Heights, Ron Antal, discussed numerous community weddings, proms, and gatherings that were held within what was formerly an esteemed hotel.

"Although it feels somewhat melancholic to demolish it, none of us from the town of Boston Heights seem particularly upset about its impending removal since it has been taking an exceptionally long time," stated Antal.

The council members informed us that a Sheetz gas station will be developed on part of the land, however, they are still considering various possibilities for the remaining area.

Some argue that tearing down the hotel will pave the way for substantial development in the surrounding region.

"Hopefully, this will soon turn into an excellent opportunity for jobs and enhance the taxes needed for this region," states Lyon.
