"Chaos Looms": Expert Warns Trump's Cuts Threaten 'Backbone of Everything' in Weather Defense
The administration under President Donald Trump is significantly raising the chances of Americans being unprepared for severe weather events, as stated by a meteorologist.
During a Monday interview With host Dana Bash, CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam explained the practical effects of the Trump administration’s budget reductions for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Focusing on extreme weather events, Van Dam informed his audience that Americans were alerted about the upcoming series of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms one week prior to their occurrence, all due to the efforts of NOAA’s personnel and resources.
NOAA genuinely serves as the unseen foundation supporting all aspects of what we use daily. They not only provide the weather and climate information shared with audiences but also maintain the systems ensuring this data reaches us effectively," stated Van Dam. "Consider radar networks, balloon releases supplying meteorological inputs, and satellites observing our weather conditions from orbit.

Van Dam asserts that the weather forecasts from NOAA and the NWS significantly affect the U.S. economy, with sectors such as agriculture and air transport heavily dependent on these government-supported meteorologists for navigating their business operations. He cautioned that reducing funding to these organizations could lead to far-reaching consequences in the future.
Reducing and downsizing our workforce would lead to chaos," Van Dam stated. "Consider just last weekend; there were more than 300 tornado reports and over 650 severe thunderstorm alerts. Keep in mind that each of these was identified by an individual who analyzed specific criteria indicating a potential tornado or severe storm. If we begin decreasing staff, issuing accurate warnings might become increasingly unlikely, potentially leading to overlooked threats.
The Trump administration has already dismissed approximately 1,300 NOAA employees in the previous month, and substantial layoffs may lie ahead for the agency. TIME magazine reporting That roughly an additional 1,000 employees within the workforce of around 13,000 people at the agency might face termination in the current quarter. These widespread layoffs are set to occur mere months prior to the commencement of the 2025 hurricane season on June 1st, when countless Americans residing in regions susceptible to hurricanes depend on accurate weather forecasts for timing possible evacuations.
