Matthew Macfadyen Set to Star as George Smiley in Upcoming John le Carré Adaptation, Season Five Announced by Ink Factory

A television series inspired by the writings of John le Carré, featuring Matthew Macfadyen as the lead actor, is generating significant interest in the industry.

In this project, Macfadyen will take on the role of George Smiley, a key figure in several le Carré stories. Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram have penned the preliminary scripts for what could become a TV series, and Graham Yost, known for his work on shows like "Silo," "Justified," and "Slow Horses," has joined as an executive producer.

The project is characterized as a blend of several le Carré novels such as "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," and "The Honorable Schoolboy," along with some additional published works and previously unseen material.

As per someone familiar with the initiative, it has already been presented to purchasers in both the U.S. and U.K., resulting in several bids being made.

If the series progresses, Macfadyen will become the most recent actor to depict the renowned spymaster Smiley on screen. Before him, actors such as Gary Oldman, Rupert Davies, Alec Guinness, and Denholm Elliott have taken on this role in both movies and TV shows.

This also represents the most recent television role that Macfadyen has taken on lately. After his standout performance in the popular HBO series "Succession," for which he secured two back-to-back Emmy awards, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA Award, Macfadyen signed on to star in another project. forthcoming Netflix historical drama "Death by Lightning" And he gained recognition from the Peacock series 'The Miniature Wife.' The Ink Factory, established by le Carré's offspring Stephen and Simon Cornwell, has previously adapted several works by the renowned author. This includes their television series adaptation of "The Night Manager," featuring Tom Hiddleston. Upon release, this show secured two Emmy awards and three Golden Globe awards, with Hiddleston winning Best Actor among them.

In 2024, it was reported that BBC and Amazon Prime Video had grabbed two additional seasons of the series Hiddleston is reprising his role as Jonathan Pine. The production house also brought forth the series "The Little Drummer Girl" along with the movie "A Most Wanted Man," all adapted from le Carré’s works.
