Min Woo Lee Fires Up in Houston as He Aims to Leave Sawgrass Behind
Min Woo Lee has begun the Texas Children’s Houston Open with a strong performance. The Australian shot a four-under 66, securing him a top position. on the early leaderboard .
The impressive performance is a positive indicator for the popular contestant, who had previously faced significant difficulties when nearing victory. During the first two days of The Players Championship, alongside Akshay Bhatia, Lee shared the lead. However, things took a turn for the worse as he ended up in the final pairing on Saturday, resulting in a tough outing where he carded a disappointing 6-over-par 78 at TPC Sawgrass.
Following his Thursday round at Memorial Park, Lee talked about what he gleaned from his frustrating showing when vying for honors at Sawgrass.
Yeah, particularly on Saturday when we were playing, it was quite windy which made things difficult," Lee commented. "I felt like I managed to pull through even though my performance wasn’t as strong as the first couple of days.
On Thursday and Friday, my performance was incredible with minimal wind, which made things easier. Even when shots weren’t great or didn’t travel as far as they did during the first couple of days, mentally it could feel confusing since those earlier rounds had been smooth sailing. The key is staying focused without getting ahead of oneself; perfection isn’t required for a solid game of golf,” explained the 26-year-old player.
On Thursday, Lee did precisely that. Following bogeys at holes 12 (where he began on the back nine), 2, and 4, he promptly responded by notching birdies on holes 13, 3, and 5.
Thanks to his power off the tee and deft touch near the green, Lee is well-suited for competition at Memorial Park. This was a key reason he chose to play in this tournament leading up to The Masters.
Sure, my performance has been quite impressive," he stated on Thursday. "I did face some challenges with a few tricky spots during the game which threw me off somewhat. Originally, I planned for a three-week hiatus; however, post-Masters, things remain uncertain regarding my upcoming schedule. It’s unclear whether I’ll participate in events like Hilton Head and Zurich. So, considering taking this week off would result in an extended period without playing since the Masters. The venue we played at suited my style well—it had length and relatively sparse rough.
Even though Lee faced challenges during the weekend at Sawgrass, he managed to play exceptionally well to secure a spot in the final group for the weekend round at the most significant tournament outside of the majors this year. This performance has carried over to his game in Houston, and should he continue like this, he may have another opportunity to demonstrate his ability to deliver under pressure on the weekends.
Lee will start his game at 2:25 p.m. ET on Friday along with fellow Australian Karl Vilppu and Harris English, who won this year's Farmers Insurance Open.
