NY Democrat Slams Far-Left 'Absurdities' Pushed by 'College-Educated Elites'
Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., criticized the "college-educated elites" promoting ridiculous ideas such as "defund the police" to working-class voters on Thursday.
Torres raised this issue when talking about how Democrats could flourish during the Trump administration. "Politics War Room" podcast alongside Democratic strategist James Carville, Torres highlighted that he embodies the "practical" viewpoints of the working class in his Bronx constituency. He stressed that these constituents prioritize cost reduction over progressive causes.
Asinine slogans such as 'Defund the Police' or 'Abolish ICE' or terms like 'Latinx' do not originate from the working class," Torres stated. "These concepts stem from the educated elite within our society.

He cited the case of an unspecified public figure who pushed for the dismantling of law enforcement, even though they hailed from a affluent and sheltered area. Torres referred to this as a high-society social experiment with potentially fatal outcomes for poorer and ethnic communities.
Nevertheless, he believed that fringe, progressive matters were not the cause of the Democratic Party’s defeat in 2024. Torres contended that more left-leaning politicians probably had an impact on certain issues affecting the party, like those advocated by the former President Biden not acting to secure the border.

“If it had widespread support among Americans, then why did he delay taking action for so long?” asked Torres. “The reason is straightforward: He was trying to please the extreme left. The radical left wields disproportionate influence over both communication strategies and policy decisions within the Democratic Party, which has weakened our competitiveness in broader election contests.”
He stated, "Now I've come across this idea that to undo the outcomes from the 2024 election, we must adopt far-left positions. This does not seem logical to me at all."

Torres has often criticized his own party for concentrating excessively on divisive, marginal topics that he thinks deter moderate voters.
He has similarly faced criticism from progressive activists and House members over his support for Israel following the Oct. 7 terrorist assault by Hamas.
