Republicans Propose Move of NASA Headquarters to Florida
On Friday, Republican senators Rick Scott and Ashley Moody from Florida proposed a bill suggesting that NASA’s headquarters should be relocated from Washington to Florida.
Titled Streamlining Aerospace Initiatives Effectively at Cape Canaveral Act Known as the CAPE Canaveral Act, this bill aims to move the NASA headquarters to Florida’s Space Coast in Brevard County. This area encompasses both the Kennedy Space Center and the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
Scott’s office referred to Florida as "a sensible decision" for the location of the new headquarters.
"There isn’t a more suitable location for NASA’s headquarters than Florida’s Space Coast, where our country’s most brilliant thinkers innovate and assist America in reaching for the cosmos," Scott stated in a release.
"Relocating to Florida won’t just conserve American taxpayers' money; it will also boost effectiveness and improve processes within this crucial sector due to closeness to private-sector collaborators and access to a premier workforce poised to assist America in achieving its aspirations for space exploration," he said additionally.
Moody echoed this idea, stating that Florida leads in space exploration and aerospace innovation. He further noted that "having NASA’s headquarters located on the Space Coast will help close the bureaucratic gap from above and unite all stakeholders."
"Florida serves as the entry point to space, and this practical proposition aims to reduce taxpayer expenses, foster cooperation with commercial aerospace firms, and leverage Florida’s skilled labor force to drive additional advancements," she noted.
Scott and Moody aren't the sole legislators advocating for moving NASA's headquarters to their respective states, citing the building's lease as an issue. scheduled to expire in 2028 .
