Tate McRae Dominates 2025 Juno Awards From Afar: Complete Winners Revealed

The largest victor at the 2025 Juno Awards was absent when their accolades were presented.

Tate McRae won four awards – for artist, single, album and pop album of the year – but was not able to make it to the Vancouver, British Columbia awards ceremony on Sunday (March 30) or the untelevised gala the night before to accept. That's an ongoing issue at the Junos, where the responsibilities of the biggest international superstars often keep them from their home country's award show.

Stars like Drake , The Weeknd and Shawn Mendes Although we were not present at Rogers Arena for the event, a prevailing motif throughout the evening showcased exceptional talent from Canada. Amidst U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canada and his threats to make it the country’s 51st state, numerous individuals seized the opportunity presented by the Junos to proudly display their national pride through cultural symbols.

McRae clinched four out of five nominations, claiming Artist of the Year for the consecutive second year, Single of the Year for the second year running ("Exes" winning this year after "Greedy" took the prize previously), along with Album of the Year and Pop Album of the Year for the first time (both accolades coming her way). Think Later She missed getting the fan-choice award, which went to the consistently internet-famous rap artist. bbno$ , which went viral on TikTok and sponsored the award. During his acceptance speech, he generated another trending moment by using the opportunity to publicly denounce billionaire and prominent Trump adviser Elon Musk as a "piece of trash."

This marked a sharper critique of the U.S. government compared to the majority of the program, which primarily conveyed a patriotic "Canada is not up for grabs" sentiment. During his acceptance speech for Country Album of the Year, emerging Ontarian artist Josh Ross expressed gratitude towards his record company, Universal Music, both in Canada and the United States, emphasizing the importance of having friends rather than adversaries.

Host Michael Bublé started the performance with a blend of his popular tracks in four distinct languages, performing alongside Canadian artists such as Elisapie, Jonita Gandhi, Roxanne Bruinooge, and Maestro Fresh Wes. This showcased the variety of musical styles and categories, while his introductory speech referenced the well-known "I Am Canadian" advertisement, expressing national pride and asserting that Canada is “the best country in the world.”

Apart from special accolades, just four awards were handed out during CBC’s Sunday telecast, with most honors being bestowed at the industry gala held the previous evening. Among these was an award for Group of the Year. Despite Sum 41 appearing to be a strong contender—considering their induction into Canada’s Music Hall of Fame on the same program and their performance closing the event with a selection of their iconic pop-punk hits—it unexpectedly went to The Beaches once again this year. This win marked another successful period for the Toronto-based ensemble, following up their breakout success with “Blame Brett” in 2023 and maintaining momentum ever since.

The evening’s second significant honor was awarded as breakthrough artist of the year. This distinction was bestowed upon Nemahsis, a Palestinian-Canadian musician who faced being let go from her main record company due to her insistence on not silencing her support for Palestine following October 7th events. Winning both alternative album of the year and performing during the show, she used her acceptance speech to dedicate the prize to other women wearing headscarves, expressing how much she wished simply to flip through Canadian television channels and spot someone resembling herself. “It never crossed my mind it might take so long or that eventually, I’d end up doing exactly what needed accomplishing,” she shared with emotion. In gratitude, she acknowledged contributions made by OVO Sound producer Noah "40" Shebib along with artist Jad El Khoury towards completing her latest project. Verbathim When she unexpectedly found herself completely independent but lacked the funds to manage on her own.

Anne Murray was given the lifetime achievement award, marking only the second time in Junos history the award has been given (the other was to the architect of Canadian Content regulations and the namesake of the Junos, Pierre Juneau). Wearing a bedazzled Canada hockey jersey, the singer – who holds the record for most-ever Junos ahead of The Weeknd – talked about the importance of Canada to her multi-decade career and called the country her "safety blanket." Producer Boi-1da won the international achievement award, recognizing his huge hits on the global stage – including four No. 1s on the GudangMovies21Hot 100 – for artists like Rihanna, Drake and Eminem.

Other performances on the show included Haida Nation rap album of the year winners Snotty Nose Rez Kids with Tia Wood, Sunday night winners bbno$ and Josh Ross and an all-star Punjabi performance that featured Gminxr, Jazzy B, Inderpal Moga and Chani Nattan. Karan Aujla winning the fan choice award in 2024 showed the institution's recognition of the Punjabi Wave, and the Junos implemented the new South Asian recording of the year award this year. AP Dhillon won for The Brownprint ; however, the award was unfortunately not televised.
