Taylor Sheridan's Breakout Hit Jumps from Big Screen to Netflix’s Top 10, Leaving Westerns Behind

Every week, Netflix unveils its Top 10 list from the previous week, highlighting the most-watched items movies and TV shows One of the highest-grossing films for the week starting March 3rd through March 9th isn’t a brand-new release or even an old classic; instead, it’s a decade-old crime film headlined by Emily Blunt. Despite appearing out-of-the-blue, this resurgence can be attributed to Sicario, the acclaimed 2015 suspense flick where Blunt plays an FBI agent aiming to capture a key figure within a Mexican drug cartel. The screenplay for this movie comes courtesy of Taylor Sheridan, known for his work on "Yellowstone," adding significant weight to its production value and attracting notable stars along the way.

"Sicario" stands out as an exceptional crime thriller, earning nominations for three Academy Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing. Looking back, one key factor that distinguishes this film is its direction by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, known later for directing "Blade Runner 2049" and the upcoming "Dune" sequels. Additionally, it marked screenwriter Taylor Sheridan’s debut script. This combination lends significant credibility, not to mention the star-studded cast which features top-tier actors like Emily Blunt alongside Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, a young Daniel Kaluuya before “Get Out,” and Jon Bernthal during his heyday due to “The Walking Dead.” Victor Garber, famous for his role as the methodical Sydney Bristow in "Alias," rounds off the ensemble, adding another layer of quality according to my belief that each production benefits greatly from his involvement.

Sheridan was not the name that he is today when Sicario came out but it put him on the map as a writer, earning him a Writer's Guild of America award for Best Original Screenplay. And while Sicario does feature some of the same themes relating to power and the conflict between those who live in and outside of the law that Yellowstone is known for, it's a far cry from the Dutton universe Sheridan went on to create. (Sicario honestly shares much more DNA with one of Sheridan's other non-Yellowstone projects, Special Ops: Lioness , the Paramount Plus show about a clandestine all-female CIA program, which stars Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña.)

Since "Sicario" landed on Netflix on March 1st, it has surged in popularity and now ranks as the fifth most-watched English movie. Despite receiving favorable critiques upon release and earning respect over time, the rise of its creator and screenwriter as major figures in Hollywood during the last decade probably contributed to expanding its audience. For those who have seen "Sicario," they might also enjoy watching its lesser-known yet engaging follow-up, penned by Sheridan, titled "Sicario: Day of the Soldado." Paramount Plus .
