TCU Women's Basketball Team Heads to First Sweet 16 With a Rousing Send-Off
Enthusiasts of every age converged outside Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday to cheer on the TCU women's basketball team as they departed. Its inaugural Sweet 16 appearance in program history.
Among those present at the event was Regina Middleton, employed by the Office of the Registrar. During an interview with her, she shared emotionally, “I’m fighting back tears; I can’t even find my voice right now. This moment is incredible. It truly highlights the significance of women’s athletics as well as our TCU community.”
The ladies' basketball squad has been making history at every turn this season. Their presence in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 marks yet another chapter in their record book. Neither the TCU men’s nor the women’s basketball teams have ever progressed as far as this in the NCAA Tournament before.
As per Lucas Turner, an undergraduate at TCU, he believes this situation has been a long time in the making.
Turner exclaimed, "This is the best outcome we could have wished for. We've been waiting ages for this chance. I must pause and savor the moment. It’s incredibly enjoyable, I’m thrilled beyond words, and I can’t wait for the girls to experience this too."
While the thrill of a Sweet 16 send-off is new territory for these TCU fans, it’s an area where Hailey Van Lith has consistently found herself throughout her college years. Actually, she stands out as the first player since 2000 to reach the Sweet 16 five times.
Before her fifth match, she talked about how her mindset changes when reaching this stage of the competition.
Mentally, there’s a distinct difference between playing under pressure because you’re supposed to win and facing off against two formidable teams on Saturday with an uncertain outcome," Van Lith stated. "Both sides likely possess comparable talents as per the scouting reports, making player excellence almost equal; thus, errors can be costly yet grit and high competitiveness could sway the game. Hence, this is where their mental approaches must adapt.
As the players change their perspectives, the fans remain steadfast in their beliefs. When questioned about the potential of this TCU squad, both Turner and Middleton gave identical answers: "All the way."
