Tom Hardy Reveals How Close a Venom-Spider-Man Crossover Got, Before It All Fell Apart

Tom Hardy appeared on "The Discourse Podcast" from The Playlist And it was verified that a crossover involving Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man came “as close as I could realistically expect” but ultimately fell through. Despite being an Oscar-nominated individual, they didn’t specify the exact reasons behind this project stalling; however, they hinted that corporate dynamics within the studios played a significant role.

Getting very near was what we achieved," Hardy mentioned regarding a potential collaboration with Holland’s Spider-Man. "It came closer than anything else I could think of short of co-starring in a movie, something I genuinely wished for because sharing screen time like that would be incredibly enjoyable.

In an episode of The Discourse Podcast, host Mike DeAngelo questioned whether internal studio dynamics were responsible for the cancellation of the crossover. In response, Hardy stated that the project did not materialize due to "all the factors you outlined in your explanation."

Primarily, my motivation comes from thinking about the kids," Hardy elaborated regarding his interest in a Venom-Spider-Man collaboration. "Even though adult audiences clearly show their enthusiasm for superhero movies with impressive box office numbers, I often find myself reflecting on how crucial these characters are to children. It’s disappointing for them when their beloved heroes don’t appear alongside each other in films.

In Sony’s 2018 film, Hardy made his first appearance as Venom, a movie that earned an impressive $856 million globally. He returned to play this role in not one but two follow-up movies: “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” from 2021 and “Venom: The Last Dance,” scheduled for release in 2025. This final installment with Hardy portraying Venom brought in $478 million internationally.

Hardy discussed on the podcast how they felt incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with such an iconic character as Venom in their comic book film series. He explained that despite being constrained by certain limitations, they put their hearts and souls into every project. They embraced the creative freedom afforded to them and found joy in crafting these movies according to those guidelines. The pleasure derived from this endeavor surpassed any restrictions placed upon them since they concentrated solely on executing what was permitted and thoroughly enjoyed the process.

Ruben Fleischer, who helmed the first "Venom" film with Hardy, confirmed to Fandom In 2019, the intention was always to expand Tom Hardy's comic book franchise leading to a crossover with Tom Holland's "Spider-Man."

Fleischer stated back then, “That’s where everything is headed.” He added, “And what makes this thrilling is that for the initial film, we altered Venom’s backstory. While in comic books, he originated as an offshoot of Spider-Man, due to the arrangement between Marvel and Sony, we couldn’t go with that narrative. So, the part I believe fans should look forward to is witnessing their eventual confrontation.”

Hardy told GudangMovies21 At last year’s “Venom: The Last Dance” red carpet event, he stated, “I would absolutely love to battle Spider-Man. Right here, right now—I’m completely up for fighting Spider-Man anytime. I’d definitely not rule out such a confrontation.”
