'Coyote vs. Acme': Back for More After Warner Bros. Shelves the Show
NEW YORK (AP) — This time, things are going well for Wile E. Coyote.
After being shelved by Warner Bros. in 2023, the Looney Tunes film “Coyote vs. Acme” has found a new home. Ketchup Entertainment announced Monday that it acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film for an undisclosed sum.
This agreement infuses new vitality into one of the three entirely finished movies. Warner Bros. chose to claim a tax write-off instead of releasing it. This strategy, implemented after a shift in leadership at Warner Bros. following the pandemic, faced significant criticism from both creators and enthusiasts. The two other postponed films—the $90 million DC Studios project "Batgirl" and the animation "Scooby-Doo: Scoob! Holiday Haunt"—have yet to see release.
However, "Coyote vs. Acme" will be rescued from obscurity. Ketchup Entertainment intends to schedule a theater release at some point in the future.
We're excited to announce our agreement with Warner Bros. Pictures to distribute this movie globally," stated Gareth West, CEO of Ketchup Entertainment. "'Coyote vs Acme' masterfully combines classic charm with contemporary narrative techniques, reviving cherished Looney Tunes characters for today’s audience.
Directed by Dave Green and adapted from An article from The New Yorker written by Ian Frazier “Coyote vs. Acme” chronicles Wile E. Coyote as he sues Acme Corporation due to numerous defective items that were unable to help him capture the Road Runner. This blend of live action and animation features John Cena and Will Forte.
Earlier reports indicated that Ketchup acquired the film for approximately $50 million, despite having incurred production costs of around $70 million. Ketchup, a distribution company established in 2012, has also recently debuted another Looney Tunes movie originally dropped by Warner Bros., titled "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie." Within three weeks of its release, this movie earned $8.2 million from domestic box office tickets.
