Will Smith Unleashes 'Based on a True Story': His Epic 20-Year Comeback Album

Will Smith's comeback to hip-hop is here, with the actor-turned-rapper releasing new music. Inspired by Actual Events , his first album in 20 years, on Friday.

Smith had released the new album ahead of time through these singles. "Beautiful Scars" With tracks like Big Sean’s "First Love," "You Can Make It," "Tantrum," and "Work of Art," the album arrives nearly two decades since Smith dropped his previous record. Found and Recovered: Inspired by Actual Events This project brought Smith back together with DJ Jazzy Jeff and includes collaborations with Teyana Taylor, Joyner Lucas, and Smith’s son Jaden Smith. The Hollywood Reporter reported last year, Smith inked a distribution agreement with independent label Slang Records for the project.

"The past couple of years, I've been doing a very deep exploration of who and what I truly am," Smith said in a teaser video Smith posted on his Instagram hours ahead of his official release on Thursday. "The process of this album is really allowing myself to be more honest with myself than I ever have about who and what I actually am. This is about to be the greatest artistic creative period of my entire life."

The last few years have undoubtedly been significant for Smith, particularly because he’s still working on rehabilitating his public image after the well-known incident at the 2022 Oscars when he famously slapped Chris Rock onstage due to a joke Rock made regarding Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Despite this, Smith appears to remain active in his musical endeavors, having recently announced a tour abroad that will traverse significant parts of Europe beginning in late summer. The reception to the new music remains uncertain due to the lengthy hiatus from being a dedicated recording artist. Discussing this, Glide in the Dawn on Thursday Smith remembered the guidance he received from Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar when working on the project.

"You have to stick with what’s genuine for yourself," Smith quoted Jay as saying. "When you see these younger rappers, you might wish their lifestyle was true for you, but that isn’t how your life goes. Stay authentic to your own narrative. Share your personal journey." It was this advice from Jay that inspired the title 'Based on a True Story' for Smith.
