Winners and Losers From Thursday's NFL Free Agency: Steelers Land Quarterback

The NFL off-season has begun as the new league year kicked off this week.

Let's examine some of the major gainers and decliners from Thursday's market movements and transactions.

Winner: Mason Rudolph, the team's quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers

It isn’t the quarterback anyone anticipated or been looking forward to, yet the Pittsburgh Steelers have indeed signed a quarterback during this off-season.

They reinstated Mason Rudolph, who boasts a significant track record with the organization, signing him to a two-year deal. This move could be quite beneficial for Rudolph since his chances of starting and connecting with DK Metcalf and George Pickens on long throws may improve, contingent upon how the quarterback situation unfolds during free agency.

If the Steelers sign Aaron Rodgers, he could potentially have an opportunity to play later in the season even if a 41-year-old Rodgers doesn’t participate in all 17 games or perform at his best level. In either case, this situation presents a great opportunity for Rudolph.

Loser: C.J. Stroud, the quarterback for the Houston Texans

Great news for Stroud: the Texans have implemented significant alterations to their offensive line this offseason, aiming to tackle the major problem and deficiency that plagued them during the 2024 season.

Bad news for Stroud: they have it. might have inadvertently weakened the offensive line than it already was.

The Texans released Kenyon Green, who allowed the third-highest one-on-one pressure rate among all guards, and have since signed Ed Ingram, who had the highest such rate, along with Laken Tomlinson, who ranked fourth.

Including the trade for left tackle Laremy Tunsil, there are definitely several significant question marks concerning the Texans' offensive line.

Winner: Jack Conklin, Offensive Tackle, Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns revised the veteran tackle's contract, enabling him to potentially make up to $12 million for the current season with bonuses factored in. This adjustment also pushes back his free agency eligibility from 2027 to 2026.

For Conklin, winning here means securing his earnings for this season, getting a chance to demonstrate his health throughout a complete campaign. Additionally, it positions him to reach free agency a year ahead of schedule, where he might have another shot at landing a significant pay increase in his professional tenure.

Loser: Everyone is looking up to Aaron Rodgers.

If you're counting on a 41-year-old quarterback to decide where he'll play this season, there may not be any positive outcome for your team.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Giants, and possibly the Minnesota Vikings find themselves in a wait-and-see mode as they determine their next steps for the offseason.

Russell Wilson, likely seen as a secondary choice after Rodgers, remains in a wait-and-see mode, anticipating which team could still express interest in acquiring him.

The victor in this lottery will have to shell out substantial funds for a quarterback who could end up being more of a disruption than his value warrants on the playing field. Everyone else must choose among Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Joe Flacco.

Winner: Gardner Minshew, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs

Following his stint over the last two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars, Minshew has now secured a chance to serve as the backup for Patrick Mahomes. He reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

No matter which team Minshew signed with during free agency, he was primarily destined to be a backup this season. However, joining a Super Bowl contending squad provides him an opportunity to fulfill that role while also securing guaranteed funds from the Raiders. This arrangement works out well for everyone involved.
