With Switch 2 on the Horizon, Nintendo Develops Virtual Game Cards for Seamless Cross-Device Play

On Thursday, Nintendo revealed that they are developing Virtual Game Cards, which will enable digitally downloaded games to be more easily transferred between various devices. This much-anticipated feature aims to enhance portability for digital titles. Nintendo Switch 2 On the horizon, these Virtual Game Cards will simplify the process of transferring existing Switch games to new devices for users.

Currently, Switch games can be obtained through two methods: as a physical game card similar to a conventional video game cartridge, or via digital download. Although physical game cards can be simply removed and inserted into another Switch console for straightforward gameplay, transferring digital downloads between devices has proven somewhat more challenging.

Virtual Game Cards will be available starting in late April with the aim of making digital games function similarly to their physical counterparts. Users can seamlessly transfer games across various devices provided they link them locally during the initial move.

The Virtual Game Cards offer the ability to share games with members of your Nintendo Family Group, including up to eight individuals, through local Wi-Fi connections. You may loan just one game per person at a time, and after a two-week lending duration, the games revert back to you automatically.
