Zelenskiy: Significant Chance for War Endgame in Sight
KYIV (https://5.180.24.3/) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Friday that he believed there was a significant opportunity to conclude the conflict with Russia following Ukraine’s acceptance of a U.S.-proposed temporary truce lasting approximately one month. However, Russia indicated they would concur but under specific stipulations.
"At present, we have a strong opportunity to bring this war to an early conclusion and establish peace. We have robust security agreements with our European allies," Zelenskiy stated on X.
“We are now nearing the initial stage of ceasing all wars—silence,” he stated, alluding to a ceasefire.
Addressing journalists, Zelenskiy called upon the U.S. and allied nations to exert pressure on Moscow, reaffirming his conviction that Russian President Vladimir Putin will prolong ceasing fire for as long as he can.
"Should the United States show a robust reaction, they won’t permit them to act with impunity. As for Russia, if it takes actions unbefitting fear, they might drag their feet," Zelenskiy said to reporters.
He mentioned that the truce along a front line exceeding 1,000 kilometers (about 600 miles) might be managed with assistance from the U.S., using satellite technology and intelligence. Following meetings between American and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia this week, where Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire, the U.S. has restarted intelligence sharing and military support.
Zelenskiy mentioned that during the meeting, officials talked about territorial concerns; however, resolving this matter would necessitate a challenging discussion.
"The most challenging aspect following the truce is the matter of territories," Zelenskiy stated during a press conference.
As the conflict enters its fourth year, Russian troops now dominate approximately one-fifth of Ukraine’s land. Additionally, these forces have consistently made progress in the eastern area of Donetsk over the past several months.
"The cessation of hostilities clears the path for both parties to conclude the war. Moreover, the territories... will serve as the key factor enabling an end to the conflict once this matter is settled," stated the President of Ukraine.
Moscow has insisted that Kyiv should permanently relinquish territories claimed by Russia, which include Crimea as well as four additional regions. This demand has been refused by Ukraine.
Zelenskiy mentioned he was conversing with Kyiv’s partners about upcoming security assurances and additional economic aid. He further stated that having complete aerial defense coverage at 100% would be essential as a deterrent within a potential peace agreement.
