Boda boda riders to get health insurance for KSh 50 per week and NTSA licenses for KSh 100 daily

The Kenyan boda boda industry is set for enhanced safety and insurance coverage following initiatives by the government and stakeholders such as Expendo Mobility.

Stakeholders in the transport industry, in collaboration with the NTSA, launched an initiative allowing boda boda riders to acquire driving licenses by paying KSh 100 daily.

The Automobile Association of Kenya and NTSA, through an initiative dubbed 'Licence na Mia' have significantly subsidised the cost of training motorbike riders on riding, road safety, defensive driving and response to emergencies as a measure of reducing road carnage.

In a parallel move, other stakeholders, Expendo, have launched a programme allowing boda boda riders to get health coverage for accidents by paying KSh 50 daily.

Speaking to .co.ke, Expendo Mobility director Paul Mwandoe explained that the company saw an urgent need to build inclusive, affordable, and tech-driven micro-insurance solutions tailored to the realities of informal and mobile workers.

"Many riders operate in high-risk environments with minimal or no coverage in case of accidents, injuries, or medical emergencies. Traditional insurance is often too expensive, rigid, or complicated for their needs. Healthcare access is limited, and out-of-pocket expenses can be financially devastating. Riders lack flexible plans, clear communication, and claim processes that cater to their daily hustle," Mwandoe said.

He further explained that the company has introduced Expendo Hosi Bill a low-cost accident and hospitalisation insurance plan designed specifically for Boda Boda riders.

"It offers coverage for hospital bills, accident-related injuries, medical expenses, and even last expense benefits. Riders pay a weekly contribution, as little as KSh 50, and in return, they receive financial protection when the unexpected happens," Mwandoe added.

The director added that they had integrated a simple onboarding process via WhatsApp or field agents and they ensure fast claims processing. He also noted that riders can also enroll on the programme through their SACCOs or the Expendo website.

"We actively engage SACCO leaders, conduct safety awareness campaigns during activations, and partner with local governments to push for structured insurance adoption," Mwandoe stated.
"This small weekly investment can save them thousands in out-of-pocket expenses. It also gives their families a financial cushion, ensuring they’re not left to struggle in times of crisis," he remarked.

Mwandoe told .co.ke that the company has been actively onboarding riders onto the insurance programme in Nyeri, Kibra, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Mombasa and other parts of the country.
