'Surprise Delight: Bay Area Restaurant Crowned Best in America'

Oakland's renowned soul food eatery Burdell has been named the top U.S. restaurant by Food & Wine magazine.

Food & Wine published their yearly Global Tastemakers Awards On Wednesday, it showcased a curated list featuring some of the nation's top dining establishments along with the finest U.S. cities known for their culinary scenes. Burdell, who was included among these prestigious selections, Michelin Guide Last summer, it topped the list in the magazine’s rankings as number one. top 15 U.S. restaurants along with the top position for the best overall U.S. winners .

Burdell was part of a distinguished roster of leading U.S. restaurants that also featured several others. Michelin Guide- included Musket Room in New York City and the Virtue restaurant in Chicago James Beard Award -chef Erick Williams hailing from Los Angeles. Yangban , a Korean-American restaurant located in Los Angeles’ Arts District neighborhood, was the sole representative from California among the top 15 U.S. eateries listed and secured the seventh position on the ranking.

Food & Wine magazine also highlighted the Top 10 American Cities for Cuisine and Beverages , with San Francisco ranked at No. 8 and Los Angeles securing the third position. New York outperformed both Californian cities, topping the list as the best in the U.S.

Burdell launched in autumn 2023 with revamped traditional soul food creations crafted by Chef Davis, who formerly honed his skills at the renowned former Aqua eatery in San Francisco. Cyrus in Geyserville , among others. Davis has previously characterized his menu as "elevated" soul food, due to the use of high-quality ingredients and sophisticated cooking methods. Previous offerings have featured an interpretation of chicken and waffles where traditional buttermilk waffles and fried chicken were replaced with chicken liver paté paired alongside cornmeal waffles. The signature boiled peanuts appetizer continues to be offered, still seasoned with tasso spice and peanut miso.

Within just two years of opening, Burdell has received numerous awards and recognitions, including being included in the Michelin Guide last year and being designated as the Restaurant of the Year In 2024 according to Food & Wine.
