Michelin's First Regional Guide Spotlights South Carolina Restaurants
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCND) — Charleston boasts an outstanding food scene, and currently, some of its renowned eateries along with various locations throughout the state have the opportunity to be awarded Michelin stars.
The MICHELIN Guide is adopting a regional strategy and delving into genuine recipes from the American South, as stated by the French firm on Wednesday.
The updated guide encompasses Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Tennessee, along with the previously existing Atlanta guide.
We are thrilled to start this new chapter with the MICHELIN Guide because this marks the first time since its launch in North America back in 2005 that we're introducing a region-specific edition," stated Gwendal Poullennec, who serves as the International Director of the MICHELIN Guides. "Southern U.S. cooking stands out due to its blend of varied cultural impacts, resulting in distinctive dishes crafted by highly skilled and passionate chefs.
Currently, anonymous inspectors are exploring the area to uncover the finest cuisine the Southern region has to offer. Authorities mentioned that all chosen eateries will be disclosed at the upcoming annual MICHELIN Guide event for this region.
The inspectors will adhere to the traditional evaluation method employed by Michelin, encompassing these five standards: 1) superior product quality, 2) balanced taste profiles, 3) proficient culinary skills, 4) the distinctive style and character of the chef evident through their dishes, and 5) uniformity across all visits and items served (restaurants receive several inspections annually under this system).
This initiative is done in collaboration with Travel South.
Travel South USA is delighted to back the launch of the MICHELIN Guide in the Southern part of America. This area has always merited international acclaim for its exceptional farm-to-table dishes, top-notch sea fare, and vibrant food scene—a testament to the ingenuity and skill of many of the globe's finest chefs," stated Liz Bittner, who serves as both the president and CEO of Travel South USA. "It gives us immense pride to become the nation's first locale to present our gastronomic strengths across major urban centers and quaint hamlets on an international platform. We extend our deepest gratitude to all participating state tourism bureaus and locales for contributing to this pioneering venture.
Initially, the guide was extended to incorporate North America starting with New York back in 2005. Over the past few years, the growth has further encompassed various urban centers across both Canada and Mexico.
