New Orleans Makes Its Debut in the Michelin Guide

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The prestigious MICHELIN Guide is set to make its debut in New Orleans.

In an unprecedented step, Michelin and Travel South USA declared that the MICHELIN Guide will broaden its presence in North America to encompass the American South—and notably, this expansion includes New Orleans for the very first time.

This indicates that the famous eateries in New Orleans might soon receive esteemed Michelin stars, which have been widely recognized as the benchmark for top restaurants worldwide.

New Orleans has joined six states—Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee—in the upcoming MICHELIN Guide for the American South. The complete list of selected establishments will be revealed later this year.

Hell yes, we should definitely be part of that list," stated Ti Martin, co-owner of Commander’s Palace, echoing the sentiments of numerous local restaurant owners who feel that Michelin’s recognition has been too delayed.

Even though New Orleans is renowned for its cuisine worldwide, it has never previously been featured in a Michelin guide.

Leaders in tourism anticipate that this addition will enhance the state’s hospitality sector.

"It will be significant for our hospitality industry and for these excellent restaurants throughout the state to receive recognition," stated Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.

The restaurants do not get featured in the guide without selection. Confidentiality-protected Michelin inspectors dine incognito throughout various Southern cities. Applying Michelin's rigorous five-point standards, these evaluators will assess each eatery based on ingredient quality, technical skill, flavor balance, culinary individuality, and uniformity.

Commander’s Palace and Antoine’s are two longstanding establishments regarded as front-runners for acclaim, yet their proprietors maintain that their priority lies in staying true to their roots rather than seeking awards.

Our culinary heritage holds significance for us," stated Lisa Blount, who co-owns Antoine's. "However, I'm not sure if I'll adjust our dishes to achieve Michelin-star status; I believe such perfection isn't within my repertoire.

The announcement was made only a few weeks later. Time Out designated New Orleans as the Top Food City Globally —a tribute to the city’s deep blend of French, Spanish, African, and Vietnamese cultures.

The tourism marketing organization for the city, known as New Orleans & Company, has long been striving to enhance the global reputation of the city’s cuisine. They assisted in hosting the 2024 Bocuse d'Or American Championship – an esteemed event frequently referred to as the "Gastronomic Olympics" – and they plan to welcome the Pastry World Cup to New Orleans again in 2026.

Local leaders aim to promote the South, particularly Louisiana, as an essential culinary destination globally through partnerships with Michelin and Travel South USA.

Started over a hundred years ago in France, the MICHELIN Guide was initially designed to boost travel—along with tire sales. Nowadays, this guide evaluates eateries across more than 40 nations and has become an esteemed accolade within gourmet cuisine circles. The inaugural U.S.-based Michelin Guide made its appearance in New York back in 2005. Up until recently, however, the region encompassing the American South hadn’t been featured.
