Southeast Asian Market Returns This Weekend at FDR Park
The aroma of grilled chicken wings filled with sausages cooking over charcoal and the sweetness of deep-fried bananas will attract throngs of eager Philadelphia residents back to the Southeast Asian Market at FDR Park beginning this coming Saturday.
The open-air market operates every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., regardless of weather conditions, continuing until the end of October. One of the city’s liveliest festivities showcasing immigrant cuisine and heritage It was recently highlighted on The Inquirer’s “The 76” list of must-try Philadelphia experiences that has gained nationwide recognition Food & Wine as a culinary destination.
In the 1980s, a Laotian couple initiated an informal marketplace by offering papaya salad and chicken wings at a local park. Gradually, this venue evolved naturally into a popular weekly attraction featuring around 80 sellers and drawing approximately 200,000 guests throughout each season. The culinary selection encompasses dishes from Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia—this area-specific variety mirrors the strong presence of Southeast Asian populations in South Philadelphia’s community.
Guests can look forward to seeing old-time classics like Bee’z Kitchen , MaMa BK , Lucky Elephant Cafe Serving up dishes such as stir-fried lort cha noodles, lemongrass beef kebabs, bamboo shoots filled with sweet glutinous rice, and Khmer-inspired cheesesteak sandwiches, this bustling eatery exudes energy and robust flavors. Although certain vendors do accommodate digital payments, bringing cash remains your best option here.
The market changes its location halfway through the season. It operates from April to June at Picnic Area 17, which is close to the Broad Street entrance. Then, from July to October, it relocates nearer to Taney Field in Picnic Area 11.
