USDA Restores Funds, Boosting Support for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank
CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Greater Cleveland Food Bank, like many organizations nationwide, has expressed significant concerns regarding the stability of the food supply following governmental proposals to cut funding. These cuts would affect upcoming food deliveries scheduled for later this year.
These concerns have been alleviated since the USDA found extra money for purchasing food, offering stability amid food insecurities.
We're delighted to announce that beginning in June, we'll receive extra provisions, which include fresh and canned fruits, veggies, and nuts," stated Karen Pozna, the Communication Director, in a press statement. "The collaboration between food banks and the USDA has been longstanding and essential for addressing the demands of those experiencing food scarcity. We value the USDA's ongoing backing of both agricultural producers and food distribution centers.
A fifth of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s provisions originate from the USDA, as an increasing population encounters issues related to food security. In the previous year, the Food Bank assisted 424,000 individuals across six counties in Northeast Ohio.
Pozna stated that the rumors regarding food waste upon announcing the cancellation are false.
Shipments of food that were cancelled were slated for delivery from April through July 2025," she stated. "None of the donated truckloads were redirected. The food items bought by CCC continue to be distributed as planned. As far as we know, nothing is spoiling or getting wasted.
Pozna mentioned that food banks throughout the state still have the chance to lobby for the reinstatement of funds that were cut from the Ohio state budget.
