Newsom-Supported SF Speed Camera Program Unfairly Fines Drivers Differently

San Francisco is initiating a new program supported by Democratic Governor of California. Gavin Newsom That will hand out speeding tickets according to one’s financial status.

The Speed Safety System Pilot Project was signed by Newsom In October 2023, cities throughout California will be permitted to employ speed cameras to issue fines to motorists. Drivers from lower-income backgrounds qualify for significant discounts should they receive a speeding citation.

Speeding fines can vary between $50 and $500. However, people whose household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty line qualify for a 50% reduction in these fees, as stated in the regulations. San Francisco Muni Transport Authority Individuals who are indigent or without homes qualify for an 80% reduction in the cost of their speeding ticket.

San Francisco Officials initiated the program on March 20 with a total of 33 speed camera installations across the city; however, currently, only about half of these cameras are functional.

During the initial 60-day trial period, the cameras will initially serve as a warning system for speeding motorists before they begin issuing penalties afterward. A violation occurs once someone exceeds the posted speed limit by more than 11 mph.

Speed cameras were installed in locations designated as "high injury zones," where approximately 12% of San Francisco’s streets are responsible for 68% of serious injuries or fatal accidents related to traffic.
