Billy Joel's Compelling Story: 'And So It Goes' Premieres on HBO

It has been confirmed that a new documentary about Billy Joel will be broadcasted on HBO this coming summer.

As Deadline reports from the two-part series entitled And So It Goes will be created and helmed by Susan Lacy, renowned for her creation of the enduring American Master and for helming HBO documentaries like Jane Fonda Through Five Acts and Spielberg Producer Jessica Levin — who was behind the production of the aforementioned documentaries — is set to co-direct as well.

The upcoming documentary aims to offer an extensive look at both the life and music of Billy Joel, with particular emphasis on how love, loss, and personal challenges have shaped his artistic journey. The filmmakers will utilize exclusive access to unheard musical acts, private film reels, and rare photos to bring this project to fruition.

“For those who believe they have mastered Joel’s narrative, along with those less acquainted, I consider this two-part series to be an eye-opener and a shock,” Lacy mentioned in a press statement. “Initially knowing very little about him, I found myself captivated by how closely his music reflects his life and by the intricate nature of his tale.”

Billy Joel: Thus It Happens is brought to us through Lacy and Levin's Pentimento Production, Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner's Hazy Mills Productions, along with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman's Playtone for HBO Documentary Films. The documentary acknowledges Hanks, Goetzman, Milliner, Hayes, Steve Cohen, Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez as executive producers.

The news about the documentary also arrives only weeks after Joel revealed he would be postponing Several performance dates have been canceled as they require time to recover and undergo physical therapy following recent undisclosed surgical treatment.

I am sorry for delaying any performances, but my well-being has to be prioritized," Joel stated in a post shared on Instagram. "I am eager to return to the stage and spread the happiness of live music among our fantastic audience. Thanks for your support.

Joel is set to perform at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on July 5.
