David Ford of North Carolina Claims Victory in Competitive Valspar Collegiate, Secures PGA Tour Exemption

David Ford holds the number one position in the NCAA golf rankings, and he demonstrated his worthiness for this ranking on Tuesday.

The senior from the University of North Carolina claimed victory at the 2025 Valspar Intercollegiate held at the Floridian Yacht and Golf Club. He outperformed a competitive lineup featuring top-ranked amateur Luke Clanton, recent Haskins Award recipient Jackson Koivun, along with several other leading players this season. This triumph marked Ford’s third win of the year as he carded scores of 68, 63, and 64 to end up at 18 under par. His performance secured him a two-shot margin ahead of Daniel Bennett from Texas and Jase Summy from Oklahoma.

Thanks to this victory, Ford gets an automatic entry into the 2026 Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour at Innisbrook Resort. Last year, Clanton emerged as the champion of the Valspar Collegiate and participated in the tournament over the past weekend. He drove for four hours across Florida on Sunday just to link up with his Florida State teammates who finished tied for 42nd place in the Valspar. Despite a hectic weekend, Clanton secured a sole seventh position at 10-under-par, which was eight strokes behind Ford.

At Auburn University as a sophomore, Koivun finished in a tie for fourth place, ending the competition with an impressive score of 11 under par for the week.

During the team competition, No. 2 Texas surged ahead to secure a commanding 13-stroke victory over third-ranked Arizona State. Rounding out the top five were Florida State, Oklahoma, and Auburn, showcasing one of the strongest lineups of the season heading into the national championship.

Texas has secured their third victory this spring, with Bennett topping the charts, while Christiaan Maas and Jack Gilbert shared the eighth position.
