Downtown Phoenix's Central Station Set to Open After Decade-Long Development

The biggest project currently being built in downtown Phoenix is set to be completed this year and should transform the downtown area upon opening.

The facility named Central Station is situated at the intersection of Central Avenue and Van Buren Street. Although this initiative has taken ten years to develop, it is set to be finalized by 2025.

The highest section rises up to 33 floors. This building is intended for multifamily residences. To the west, you'll find another structure comprising 22 levels designated for ASU student accommodation. The first level will feature an environment described by the city as pedestrian-friendly, complete with shops, eateries, and workspaces. Additionally, areas will be allocated for various outdoor activities such as events, art exhibitions, and farmer’s markets.

The concept for rejuvenating this site began roughly a decade ago. In 2014, the municipality intended to transform this area into a new transportation hub. Nevertheless, in 2016, during negotiations with the developer, who unexpectedly passed away, these plans came to an abrupt halt.

When the city noticed shifts in the market at that time, they dedicated the following two years to reconsidering their vision for the property. Ultimately, they opted to collaborate with a developer based in Houston. However, the onset of the pandemic in 2020 delayed proceedings further. It wasn’t until 2022 that construction finally commenced.

As the site serves as the city’s transportation hub, federal funds were utilized for purchasing the property and enhancing it. Every proposal required validation from the federal authorities, adding more delays to the procedure.

The city anticipates that all visitors will be amazed as this place has transformed beyond recognition from what was once just a bus and light rail station.

The barrier around the construction site is expected to be removed by late spring, with the whole project scheduled for completion by autumn.
