Graduate Student Detained by ICE at University of Alabama, Institution Confirms

Federal immigration authorities have taken into custody a PhD student from the University of Alabama who holds Iranian citizenship, as confirmed by the institution and ICE documents.

Alireza Doroudi, an Iranian PhD candidate in mechanical engineering, is presently detained at an unknown location as per ICE records.

It wasn't immediately obvious why he was detained.

The University of Alabama stated, “We were informed that one of our doctoral students was apprehended near campus by federal immigration officials.” The institution noted, “Due to federal confidentiality regulations, we cannot disclose extensive information regarding this particular student. We hold all international scholars attending our university as integral parts of our academic community, and support services for these individuals are accessible through the International Student and Scholar Services should they require guidance or clarification.”

"United Airlines has and will keep adhering to all immigration regulations and collaborating with federal officials," the statement read.

Initially, it wasn't evident if he had obtained legal counsel.

Doroudi's LinkedIn profile indicates that he is a "qualified metallurgical engineer with more than a decade of scholarly background in Materials Science, welding, and brazing."

Doroudi is among several college students who have recently been apprehended by ICE.

President Donald Trump asserted that Khalil was a "radical foreign pro-Hamas student" and stated this marks the "first of many arrests to follow" in a recent post on his Truth Social account.

"We will locate, arrest, and expel these supporters of terrorism from our nation — ensuring they never come back,” he stated additionally.

Khalil and his legal team have refuted claims that he backs Hamas or maintains any connections with the organization.

Another student who participated in the demonstrations at Columbia University was likewise taken into custody by the Department of Homeland Security earlier this month.

Leqaa Korda was arrested By agents from Homeland Security Investigations due to an alleged overstay of her expired visa — which ended on January 26, 2022. Additionally, Korda reportedly faced arrest in 2024 related to her participation in the protests, as per DHS records.
