Justine Bateman Urges Trump and Musk: Tap Into $100M Dogecoin for a New American Film Fund

MAMGA: Restore American Cinema to Its Glory Days.

While it may not be as catchy as MAGA, filmmaker Justine Batemen is urging President Trump for support with her idea. She suggests allocating part of the funds saved from reducing federal bureaucracy through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which both President Trump and Elon Musk advocate, towards financing several feature films annually.

Bateman suggested naming the new initiative The American Film Fund, or TAFF for short. As the acclaimed director and producer known for her role in "Family Ties" from 1982 to 1989, she mentioned during an interview this week that she has someone perfect in mind to lead TAFF — herself. This discussion came up as she talked about her forthcoming Credo 23 Film Festival, which highlights films made without the use of AI technology.

"Begin with either $100 million or $50 million, and I will deliver you five to seven incredible movies that say 'America's back,' " Bateman stated.

She contended that this might serve as an excellent chance to invigorate bold cinema following years dominated by recycled concepts, high-cost superhero movies, and unexciting drivel.

“I’ve never seen the film industry so utterly disconnected from societal needs—what it could actually provide for society,” Bateman stated. “I hold affection for the film business and all those dedicated to it. However, regrettably, it has been dominated by numerous fears over the past ten years due to various factors.”

These factors encompass worries about how agitated viewers might react on social media platforms and the economic apprehension of competing with streaming giants such as Netflix. This situation has resulted in many "formulaic movies" lacking innovative perspectives. It’s unfortunate, she noted, since if American cinema aims to export cultural influence, it should strive for excellence.

Let’s spread that American spirit since it isn’t about being afraid. Instead of spreading fear and hesitation, let’s return to our roots with that rock 'n' roll attitude—get-out-of-my-way, cowboy mentality," she stated. "This truly is one of a kind across the globe.

She observed that although having the government involved in art might appear unhelpful, it has proven effective historically in other contexts. Bateman highlighted examples like the French New Wave cinema movement and significant films from Eastern Europe, which received financial support through cultural funding programs.

Bateman’s concept emerges as Musk has been leading the new DOGE initiative for President Trump. The owner of X has repeatedly stated over the last couple of months that his aim with DOGE is to reduce at least $1 trillion in annual governmental expenditures, which equates to roughly 15% of the yearly budget.

Recently, Musk, CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, has faced criticism from numerous progressive Americans and politicians due to his involvement with this initiative. Particularly, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have voiced their concerns. Musk is "unintelligent" and "ethically bankrupt." for his efforts to reduce government positions and expenditures.

Bateman mentioned that President Trump, with his experience in entertainment from shows like "The Apprentice" as well as numerous movies and late-night show appearances, seems fitting for starting TAFF. However, she clarified that the fund will remain non-partisan and capable of flourishing regardless of whether a Republican or Democrat holds the presidency.

All genres of films would be welcomed, according to Bateman, but supporting comedy could prove particularly beneficial due to the scarcity of successful comedies recently. Additionally, original concepts similar to those seen in Sean Baker’s “Anora,” which recently claimed the top prize at the Oscars, should also be considered prime candidates for backing by her organization, she mentioned.
