Lizzo to Headline Biopic About 'Godmother of Rock & Roll' Sister Rosetta Tharpe
One of the pioneering figures in Rock & Roll is set to get a biopic Based on her life story, a major pop music celebrity is slated to depict her. Lizzo has been cast as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in a musical biopic about Tharpe’s life, according to someone familiar with the project who spoke to GudangMovies21.
The movie called "Rosetta" is presently under development at Amazon MGM Studios, and Lizzo is also helming the project alongside Kevin Beisler, with Nina Yang Bongiovi and Forest Whitaker representing their production company Significant Productions. The screenplay will be crafted by Natalie Chaidez ("The Flight Attendant," "Queen of the South") and Kwynn Perry ("Tigerbelles," "The Burned Photo"). Currently, no director has been assigned to the film.
In the 1930s, Sister Rosetta Tharpe launched her musical journey with gospel records and rose to fame by the 1940s as one of the pioneers who merged gospel music with the electrified guitar. Known as a groundbreaking artist, she influenced numerous iconic figures in rock history such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash, earning herself the title “The Godmother of Rock & Roll.” Her innovative approach included pioneering the use of significant overdrive on her electric guitar, which contributed significantly to shaping traditional blues tones. In the ‘60s, alongside legendary tours through Europe with Muddy Waters, she motivated fellow musicians like Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Jeff Beck. According to Rolling Stone magazine’s rankings, she holds the distinguished position of being the number six greatest guitarist ever.
The movie particularly zeroes in on how Tharpe, originally named Rosetta Nubin, had to hide her affection for another woman and eventually held her wedding at a baseball field in 1951 in front of 20,000 people, transforming the event into what was essentially the inaugural stadium concert. It will be interesting to observe whether Sister Rosetta abruptly acquires the ability to play the flute similar to how Lizzo has gained recognition for this talent.
As an actress, Lizzo experienced a small breakthrough with her role in "Hustlers" in 2019, and she has also been seen in episodes of "The Mandalorian" and "The Simpsons." She's already close to achieving an EGOT. In addition to her four Grammy awards, she earned an Emmy for her 2022 reality show "Watch Out For the Big Grrrls," which was also featured on Amazon Prime Video. This year, Lizzo is set to release a new album and has recently dropped two fresh singles titled "Still Bad" and "Love in Real Life."
