Plane's Wing Hits Runway During Landing; Pilots Abort Approach

The wing of a Delta plane hit the runway as it approached for landing at LaGuardia Airport on Sunday evening, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Around 10:10 PM on Sunday, the aircraft's left wing hit the runway during landing, after which the pilots performed a go-around, as stated by the FAA.

A go-around is a secure and standard procedure wherein the pilot halts the landing approach and elevates the aircraft back up to perform another descent for landing when conditions permit.

The CRJ-900 airplane was en route on its usual flight schedule from Jacksonville, Florida, to New York City, as stated by Delta.

In an exchange over air traffic control radio communications, the controller informed the pilot about witnessing sparks emanating from one of their wings, asking if they had noticed anything unusual. To this, the pilot replied that they hadn’t experienced anything but would conduct a thorough inspection nonetheless.

The flight was managed by Endeavor, the same type of local airline as the Delta aircraft that had an accident during landing. while landing in Toronto In February. The aircraft involved in that incident was also a CRJ-900.

The 76 passengers along with two pilots and two flight attendants aboard Flight 4814 remained safe without any injuries, as stated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, responsible for managing the region’s three primary airports.

"Delta issued an apology to their customers regarding the experience," as stated in their release.

The airline stated that the airplane has been removed from service for evaluation by maintenance crews and did not specify when the aircraft might resume operations.

The incident likewise did not have any effect on airport operations, as stated by the Port Authority.

The FAA continues to look into the matter.
