Super Bowl Winner Matt Stevens Dies at 51, Family Announces
Former NFL Matt Stevens, a defensive back, passed away as confirmed by his family. He was 51 years old.
According to an obituary , Stevens passed away on March 20. The reason for his death was not initially disclosed.
"We share with heavy hearts the news of Matthew Stevens' departure at 51 years old, cherished son and devoted father," the announcement read.
Since retiring from football in 2003, Stevens has lived in Durham, North Carolina.

Stevens achieved prominence in football at Appalachian State , where he earned All-America honors twice. He is a member of the App State Athletics Hall of Fame as well, known as Matt Stevens.

The soccer team offered their sympathies to Stevens' family members.
In the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills chose Stevens. When playing for Washington, he achieved his highest number of regular-season interceptions with six in 1999.

Stevens played for the New England Patriots In 2001, he was part of the Patriots team that won Super Bowl XXXVI. This 20-17 win against the Rams not only secured the franchise’s inaugural Super Bowl championship but also initiated New England's era of dominance.
Stevens ended up playing for five different NFL teams during his career.
In 2007, Stevens had a motorcycle crash which left him paralyzed below the waist. After several years, he began using specialized braces that enabled him to walk again.
A memorial service for Stevens is planned for this Friday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
According to the obituary, Stevens is survived by "his mother, Jean Thillberg; his father, Vincent Stevens; his brother, Mark Stevens; and his children, Cassidie and Colin Stevens of Avon-by-the-Sea, New Jersey, along with various aunts, uncles, and cousins."
