Trump Signs Executive Order: "Securing the Safety of our National Capital"

President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Thursday with the intent of enhancing public safety in Washington, D.C.

The national capital, which belongs to every one of us, should serve as a source of pride for Americans and provide a secure space for public officials to carry out their duties," reads the executive order. "However, due to unsuccessful policies, this is currently not the case.

The executive order sets up a task force called the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, tasked with:

Deploy additional law enforcement personnel in public spaces and rigorously implement quality-of-life regulations such as anti-drug-use policies, restrictions on unauthorized protests, measures against vandalism, and rules prohibiting public drunkenness.

o Increase immigration law enforcement efforts to identify and remove dangerous unlawful immigrants, including overseeing Washington D.C.'s collaboration with federal immigration officials.

Help D.C.'s forensics crime lab obtain accreditation.

Offer support to the D.C. Police Department in attracting and keeping officers as well as enhancing their skills.

o Remove violent offenders from our communities by enhancing regulations for detaining suspects before their trials.

o Fast-track permits for responsible gun owners who wish to conceal carry.

o Clamp down on fare evasion and other offenses within the D.C. Metro system.

This executive order will introduce an initiative aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Washington D.C. This effort includes refurbishing and improving federal structures, landmarks, monuments, memorials, recreational areas, and thoroughfares. It also involves eliminating graffiti from frequently accessed spots and maintaining clean public zones and green spaces. Additionally, under this plan, the National Park Service will swiftly address and remove homelessness campsites and eradicate graffiti present within federally owned territories.

The city is approaching record-high crime levels; however, the number of officers in the D.C. police force has dropped to its lowest point in fifty years," the executive order reads. "While some on the left highlight slight reductions in D.C. crime for 2024, these figures remain significantly higher than previous years' statistics. Notably, violent crimes surged by 39% in 2023, with property crimes increasing by 24% as well.
