Willa Fitzgerald Stars in Walden Media’s Cold War Thriller 'Billion Dollar Spy,' Facing Off Against Russell Crowe & Harry Lawtey

EXCLUSIVE: Strange Darling Willa Fitzgerald is co-starring alongside Russell Crowe and Harry Lawtey in Walden Media’s Cold War thriller. Billion Dollar Spy I can let you know first.

Fitzgerald is set to portray Mae Lenihan, who is the spouse of CIA operative Tom Lenihan (Lawtey).

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by David E. Hoffman and produced by Walden Media and Weed Road, this film tells the real-life tale of Adolf Tolkachev, an unassuming individual who displayed remarkable courage and became the Pentagon’s most vital informant.

Taking place amidst the intense atmosphere of the later stages of the Cold War, Billion Dollar Spy Follows Tolkachev (Crowe), who jeopardizes everything to deliver thousands of pages of highly classified Soviet intelligence to the United States. Even after facing multiple refusals from a skeptical CIA, Tolkachev remained steadfast, demonstrating the bravery required to oppose a government that had wronged its citizens.

Ultimately, with the support of CIA agent Tom Lenihan (Lawtey), Tolkachev managed to alter the dynamics of power. This demonstrated that genuine patriotism isn’t about unconditional loyalty, but rather about being ready to question authority when it deviates from its principles. Set during a time when defiance and courage hold significant importance, his tale echoes profoundly in our current times.

BAFTA-winning director Amma Asante Beauty, A Lifestyle, A United Kingdom ) is at the helm. Academy Award-winning writer Stephen Gaghan ( Traffic, Syriana ) created the latest version by revamping a screenplay written by Ben August.

Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan, and Cher Hawrysh from Walden Media are collaborating with Goldsman and Greg Lessans from Weed Road Pictures for production duties. Jane Hooks has been appointed as Executive Producer. Co-producing roles at Pioneer Stillking Films will be taken up by Ildiko Kemeny, David Minkowski, and Ferenc Szále. International distribution will be managed by Hanway Films, whereas CAA Media Finance will oversee domestic rights. This initiative is presently entering the pre-production phase.
