CT Chef Shortlisted for James Beard Award: Top in the Northeast

A chef from Fairfield County has received a nomination as one of the top chefs in the Northeast, which makes him the sole representative from Connecticut among this year’s James Beard Award nominees—the awards often referred to as the “Oscars of the food industry.”

On Wednesday, April 2, Brian James, who runs and cooks at The Cottage in Westport, received a nomination for the prestigious James Beard Awards. Those competing with him for the title of Best Chef: Northeast come from Rhode Island, Vermont, and Massachusetts.

James embarked on his cooking career in Somers, New York, when he was 13 years old, following a football injury that kept him out of play. according to his bio He obtained diplomas from The Culinary Institute of America and Johnson & Wales University and trained under renowned culinary experts.

Thanks to his determination, Brian secured his initial role as a cook at the renowned Mona Trattoria, an esteemed establishment in Northern Westchester known for its authentic Bolognese cuisine from Emilia Romagna. During these pivotal eight years under Chef Lewis, he joined this new group and immersed himself in the craft, simultaneously developing a deep passion for culinary arts.

The James Beard Awards are scheduled for June 16 in Chicago. The Cottage can be found at 256 Post Road.
